Is a fast-food backlash underway? Consumer Reports, that stalwart tester of refrigerators, power tools, minivans, and the like, has finally gotten around to giving fast-food chains the same treatment, and it wasn’t so happy about McDonald’s, Taco Bell, KFC, or Burger King. As it turns out, no more than 11 percent of consumers polled ranked the food at these establishments “excellent,” with most finding the offerings at the major chains “uninspiring,” service only “so-so,” and overall value just middling. Pizza joints Domino’s and Pizza Hut and sandwich shops Arby’s and Quiznos were also on the failed list. Less surprisingly, In-N-Out Burger and Chipotle were the survey standouts, along with Chick-fil-A and Papa Murphy’s. This isn’t surprising because ESQUIRE Magazine came to more or less the same conclusions when they surveyed chefs’ favorite fast food in 2009. The American consumers agree.
