REGINA — For the first time, the Regina Police Service has painted a picture for the public of the particulars of street gang activity within the city.
In the past, police have been tight-lipped about many gang-related issues, but during a Crime Prevention Advisory Committee meeting Monday, Sgt. Ron Weir, head of the Street Gang Unit for the Regina Police Service, discussed — in great detail — past, present and future situations and strategies surrounding gangs.
Weir relayed the history of Regina’s anti-gang efforts, talked about how the police work with other organizations to combat gang-related crime and listed gangs currently active in Regina, describing what police know about how gangs operate in the city.
He also discussed the limitations of police suppression and the importance of prevention, noting a need for more communication and collaboration among community partners, especially around youth considered to be at risk of falling into gang operations.
