The Field: Violence, Hip Hop & Hope For Chicago

Saturday, January 11th, 2014

The documentary, directed by Mandon Lovett, goes directly to the source of the turmoil in Chicago’s inner city neighborhoods to talk with those closest to the rap scene. They visit the house of Lil’ Durk and talk to his grandmother; they hit the park with King Louie; they catch Lil’ Bibby spitting a freestyle in front of his hitters. Lil’ Reese and Katie Got Bandz appear as well, along with family members and managers who all give insight to what’s happening in Chicago and why.

One of the most touching moments in the 40+ minute documentary is near the end, where we see Rhymefest running a program called ‘Got Bars?’ that not only fosters an environment for kids to come in and hone their rap skills, but to also talk about what’s going on in their lives and find alternate ways of dealing with those issues besides violence. Watch the fascinating documentary below. It’s probably the best thing Worldstar has ever produced.
