Conan O’Brien has a Twitter account — with a very appropriate profile picture. Let the followers roll in.Conan O’Brien fans may have been a little directionless after the former “Tonight Show” host signed off for the last time on Jan. 22.
But the savvy, and now showless, comedian knew he had to rally those “Team Conan” troops if he wanted to keep his popular momentum going.
What better place to do that than on Twitter — where the “Save Coco” movement began.
According to MTV, O’Brien opened his Twitter account (twitter.com/ConanOBrien) Wednesday and just 24 hours and one tweet later, he already has close to 263,000 followers.
That’s a long way from the Ashton Kutchers and Ellen DeGeneres’ of the social network site (each have more than 4 million followers), but we think he’ll end up cracking the list of top celebrity tweeters soon enough given his mega-popularity on the Internet.
His first tweet gives us a taste of what’s to come:
February 24, Twitter: “Today I interviewed a squirrel in my backyard and then threw to commercial. Somebody help me.”
So will his Twitter account replace his TV presence? Maybe not, but it’s a start.
As he says in his bio, “I had a show. Then I had a different show. Now I have a Twitter account.”
Anyway, he’s already got Jay Leno beat in the followers arena: There are only 30,000 on the JAYLENO account.
Maybe Conan won’t need a TV show to beat Leno in the ratings. Let’s see how many followers he has by Leno’s new “Tonight Show” start date: March 1.
