Red Bull Stratos | Felix Baumgartner’s Free Fall From The Edge of Space

Sixty five years ago, Captain Charles Yeager became the first man to travel faster than the speed of sound in his X-1 aircraft. Daredevil Felix Baumgartner just became the first man to accomplish the same feat without a plane — or indeed any assistance at all. In an almost unimaginable stunt, the 43-year old Austrian has jumped from a specially constructed balloon at over 128,000 feet (39km) above the earth, breaking the world record for high-altitude skydives and speeds in free fall. As you would expect, Baumgartner is no stranger to extreme sports. He is an accomplished BASE jumper and, using a carbon wing, was the first to free fall across the English Channel. On this dive he broke not only the previous altitude record of 102,000 feet for a skydive, but likely the speed of sound and the record for fastest free fall during his descent.

Facebook’s New Offices by Frank Gehry

The best architects do more than create pleasant and useful spaces. Their buildings also have an agenda. Inside Indian Creek Island, Miami’s Billionaire Bunker

Any mere multimillionaire can buy ocean views and build teak docks for 100-foot bespoke boats. The world’s richest pay top dollar for a far more exclusive amenity: security. Such is the case with Miami’s billionaire island fortress, Indian Creek. A Russian mystery buyer recently plunked down $47 million for a plot in Miami-Dade County’s most expensive sale ever (the price eclipsed hedge fund billionaire Edward Lampert’s record-breaking purchase in April for a home right down the street).

Black Out Korea

I’ve heard of “white boy wasted” before but have you heard of “South Korean Blacked Out”? Me neither but it’s a disturbing trend that is plaguing South Korea and is giving some problems to the local law enforcement. It seems that the country is seeing an enormous rise in alcoholism and public intoxication, so much so that the NY Times decided to write a story about it.

VICE: Black Market Shopping with Pakistani Gun Runners

In 2006, Suroosh Alvi was one of a handful of journalists who was able to get into the massive guns market in Pakistan’s tribal areas — home base for the Taliban since the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in 2001. He returned to Pakistan this month and found the entire country was a “powder keg ready to explode.”

Google is able to create photorealistic 3D interactive maps of entire cities, allowing you to explore a city with Google Earth in a helicopter like view. You will be able to see these new developments on the computer, but also on your mobile, making a pretty amazing tool when touring a foreign city.
